This eye-opening tablet of seriously dark chocolate is made with fair trade cocoa beans, grown by smallholder farmers in São Tomé and transformed into delicious chocolate by us over here in England. Wondrous.
São Tomé is an archipelago made up of two main islands and several islets – it's located in the Gulf of Guinea, roughly 350 km off the west coast of Africa, and it's home to around 200,000 people. Cocoa is the country's main income generator, with tourism and coffee in hot pursuit. Cocoa farming was introduced in the 18th and 19th centuries by some Portuguese landowners, and has continued to flourish.
We work with a cooperative which works with over 200 farmers in 11 communities, and supports them and their families through employment and education. We think their cocoa is so good that we've whacked up the percentage in this tablet of chocolate to 95%. There's no pussyfooting around when it comes to São Tomé cocoa.
